BUFORD - A Suwanee boy was killed and three other people suffered serious injuries in a Wednesday night traffic accident involving a deer.
Gwinnett County Police identified the boy as 11-year-old Andrew Caymol of Suwanee, who died at the scene.
Police and Gwinnett County firefighters responded to the two-vehicle accident around 10:00 p.m. at 1180 Buford Highway, according to police.
"When the officers arrived on scene, they found that two vehicles had collided; one vehicle was on fire. The fire was extinguished and GCFD worked to treat the occupants of the vehicles," Police Corporal Michelle Pihera stated in phone interview.
The three victims with serious injuries were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment.
Andrew Caymol was a front seat passenger in a Honda Accord driven by Mateo Caymol, 47. Investigators said Matthew Caymol was a passenger in the back seat.
Authorities believe a deer ran into the path of a southbound Subaru Legacy driven by Yagi Fumio, 28, of Suwanee. Police said the Subaru hit the deer, swerved into the the northbound lane and collided head-on with Caymol's Accord. The Honda caught fire after the crash.
Charges had not been filed in the crash as of Thursday afternoon, according to Pihera, who added there it's possible none will be filed in the case.
"The lead investigator does not believe that Andrew (Caymol) or Matteo were using seatbelts inside the vehicle. It is still unknown if Matthew was restrained," said Pihera.
Drivers are reminded to be extra vigilant this time of year for deer in the area.
"You can't prevent a deer coming into your lane of travel," said Pihera. She said like any other time of year, it's a good idea to stay within the speed limit, and make sure you're not driving distracted.
