ATLANTA (AP) While final numbers are not yet in, officials projected a record-breaking day Sunday at the world's busiest airport in Atlanta.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport spokesman Reese McCraine told multiple news outlets that officials expected at least 88,000 people to pass through the airport by the end of Sunday. McCraine said the prior record for the year was 80,000 people on Columbus Day.

The busy travel day comes during a global travel alert with warnings of increased terror threats.

WSB-TV said extra security and officers were in place to deal with the high volume of travelers at the airport. Police vehicles lined up outside the airport.

The Transportation Security Administration brought in every available agent to keep the lines at the checkpoints moving.

The final tally should be available later in the week, according to McCraine.
