HOMER - Banks County Fire Chief Robert Wilkins on Wednesday provided an update on the overnight fire at H & D Pallets in Lula Monday night.
Banks County firefighters were called to a fire at H & D Pallets at 464 Garrison Shoals Road, Lula, about 8:30 p.m. Monday, and worked until about 2 a.m. Tuesday to bring the fire under control.
Firefighting personnel remained on scene at the 25,000-square-foot facility for an additional 12 hours, leaving the scene around 2 p.m. Tuesday. Crews returned every hour into Tuesday night, checking for any rekindles.
While no specific numbers are available yet, Wilkins estimates firefighters used 40,000 to 50,000 gallons extinguishing the fire.
"There are a few spots that are still smoldering due to so much debris piled on top of them," Wilkins said Wednesday. "A cause has not been determined. Investigation has begun, and a more indepth investigation will be conducted once everything cools down enough to dig in and have debris removed in order to gain access."
No damage value is available yet, but Wilkins said the company is insured.
Wilkins said he's not sure if any employees will be displaced as a result of the fire, noting employees were back Tuesday morning building more pallets in an unaffected area of the facility.
