Competition among GPD officers results in donation to food bank

GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Police Department criminal investigations division will have a chance to put pies into the faces of department leadership.

It's their reward for collecting the most food items for the Georgia Mountain Food Bank in a department contest last month.  Deputy Chief Jay Parrish said the reward will likely come next week.

"Each investigator will get to come out and choose whether it's a deputy chief, the chief or one of the captains that they want to hit in the face with a pie.  It'll be free targets," Parrish said.

Parrish said the criminal investigations division collected about 1000 items, canned food and other non-perishable food. The department total was around 2500 items.

Police delivered the food on Wednesday, and Parrish said it's all about the idea of serving others.

"That's what we want our staff to realize, and they came forward.  To give back really feels good for anybody, regardless of why you're doing it," Parrish said.

He said the department started the effort when Sgt. Justin Martin suggested the competition during a staff meeting.

In addition to the pies in the face, Parrish said administrative staff members are buying the investigations division lunch.

He said the department is looking to future ways to serve, possibly teaming with the U.S. Marines Corps Toys for Tots Program.
