FLOWERY BRANCH — Flowery Branch advanced to the Class AAAAA girls state softball tournamentt Wednesday.
The Lady Falcons, the No. 3 seed in 8-AAAAA, swept No. 6 seed Lanier 6-5 in nine innings in Game 1 and then completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory in Game 2.
Senior Maddie Hetzel got the game-winner with an RBI hit in the ninth inning in the first game. Freshman Alyssa Kimbrell recorded the save on the mound for Flowery Branch.
In the second game, sophomore Kara Kight pitched a complete game to lead the way. Senior Bailey Sims broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with a RBI double. The Lady Longhorns tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the sixth but Hetzel scored the go-ahead in a two-run top of the seventh for the Lady Falcons.
Flowery Branch will take on Loganville in a best-of-three series beginning on Monday.
