Norfolk Southern to close Roanoke building, move some jobs to Atlanta

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) Northern Southern plans to move about 500 jobs from Roanoke to Atlanta or Norfolk later this year. <br />

The railroad company announced Tuesday that the affected workers can opt to relocate with their positions. The jobs are in marketing, accounting, information technology and other departments. <br />
<br />
The employees work in Norfolk Southern's office building in Roanoke. The company says it plans to close the building, which has 203,000 square feet of office space. <br />
<br />
Norfolk Southern says in a news release that the moves are being made to make better use of its real estate assets, foster departmental synergies and streamline its management workforce. <br />
<br />
The headquarters of Norfolk Southern's Virginia Division will remain in Roanoke.
