Comeback falls short as Nighthawks drop heartbreaker to Clayton State

DAHLONEGA -- The University of North Georgia men's basketball team used a late second half surge to pull close but never could over come Clayton State (14-4, 7-3 Peach Belt) falling, 87-85. The loss drops UNG to 12-5 overall and 6-4 in conference play.<br /> <br /> Clayton State came out of the gates on fire, scoring the first 11 points of the game. The Lakers led wire-to-wire with North Georgia's final basket at the buzzer pulling UNG within two, the closest the game had been since the 17:16 mark of the first half.<br /> <br /> North Georgia had the ball with a chance to pull within one possession with 3:27 left but the Lakers got some breathing room with lights out free throw shooting down the stretch.<br /> <br /> UNG scored four points in the final six seconds of the game, but still fell two points short of forcing overtime.<br /> <br /> Sean Brennan led the North Georgia effort with 20 points on the evening. UNG had five other players score double digits on the day including Shaquan Cantrell with 18, while Corey Green, T.J. Williams, Tyler Dominy and Michael Varrichione all scoring 10. Clayton State's Kelsey Terry led the game with 30 points, but needed 23 shots to reach game-high honors.<br /> <br /> The Nighthawks will hit the road on Wednesday to take on Montevallo. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.
