GAINESVILLE - After receiving reports earlier this month of children shivering at their bus stops when a blast of arctic air moved into the area, Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch began a Coats for Kids campaign.

School Resource Officers have been working with counselors at Hall County Elementary, Middle and High Schools to determine the children who are in need of the extra layers.

As of a few days ago, 81 jackets had been donated along with more than 50 hats and scarves, 46 sets of gloves and approximately $800 in contributions toward the purchase of brand new coats.

Sheriff Couch said he is pleased with the response from the community, local businesses and our neighborhood watch groups.

"It is very heartwarming to witness the outpouring of love and kindness
whenever a child or family in our community is in need. The Hall County Sheriff's Office is honored to collaborate with our local public safety partners at the Gainesville Police Department, along with Hall County and Gainesville City Schools in serving our community with this project. Let's all do our best to ensure that no child goes without warmth this winter season. Thank you for your support."

Anyone wishing to make a donation of money or clothing can do so at the sheriff's department's administrative office at 610 Main Street SW in Gainesville. Ask for an officer in the Community Service Unit.
