ATLANTA (AP) Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says the city's fire chief has been terminated over statements he made in a self-published religious book.

Former fire chief Kelvin Cochran was suspended in late November after publishing a book that described homosexuality as a "perversion."

Cochran has said he was given approval to publish the book by the city's ethics officer but Reed has said the officer never granted him approval to publish the book.

Reed says Cochran was terminated because of his judgment, not his faith. The mayor also said Cochran remaining with the department could have left the city vulnerable to potential discrimination lawsuits in the future.
