BUFORD -- White County did one thing no one else had been able to do against No. 1 Buford: pile up more than 100 yards rushing.

However, by the time the Warriors reached the century mark the Wolves had raced out to a quick 28-0 lead en route to a 42-10 victory in both teams Region 8-AAAA opener Friday night at Tom Riden Stadium.

The Wolves (4-0, 1-0 Region 8-AAAA) had yielded just 85 total yards rushing in their first three games but the Warriors would get that by halftime. But Buford's offense was able to take advantage of a banged up White County defense early.

Buford needed just four plays to grab a quick 14-0 lead. The Wolves returned the kickoff to the Warriors 40 and then Joshua Thomas capped the quick drive with an 8-yard touchdown run.

After White County (2-2, 1-1) was stopped on three plays, Buford's Xavier Gantt raced 39-yards two plays later for a score and a 14-0 lead. The Buford defense then held White County on another three-and-out.

Luke Humphrey would connect with Evyn Cooper on a 21-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter for a 21-0 lead. Jordan Perlotte made it 28-0 on a 2-yard TD run capping the Wolves' longest drive of the night.

The Warriors got on the board in the final moments of the first half when A.J. Vandiver scampered 65 yards on a nice run inside the Wolves 15. They would get a 28-yard field goal from Brett Bardenwerper, his first-ever varsity kick, to cut the lead to 28-3 by halftime.

Buford extended its lead to 35-3 midway through the third quarter on Perlotte's second touchdown of the game on a 1-yard scoring run. White County countered on its next drive, highlighted by another 65-yard run, this time by Nasser Clark. Vandiver capped the drive with a 1-yard TD run.

Senior Elijah Bryant scored midway in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run to push Buford's lead back to 42-10.

White County finished with 170 yards rushing for the game. However, 130 came on the two long runs. The Warriors came into the game averaging over 350 yards on the ground. Clark finished with 70 yards on six carries and Vandiver had 69 yards on 14 carries.

Buford finished with 310 total yards, 190 on the ground with 10 different players carrying the ball. Perlotte led the way with 44 yards on eight carries. Humphrey finished 4-of-5 passing for 71 yards and the one TD pass.
