Americus officials mull ending public comments

AMERICUS, Ga. (AP) -- Americus residents would be able to send letters to their city council members but not speak at meetings under a proposal being considered.<br /> <br /> WALB-TV reports that council members have felt harassed by some speakers during public comment periods at meetings ( http://bit.ly/1uAERer ). Resident Tim Lewis told the station that the proposal breeds distrust and says citizens have a right to address their leaders in public.<br /> <br /> Americus Mayor Barry Blount says the change wouldn't shut down communication because people still can send letters.<br /> <br /> The television station reports that the council is expected to consider the draft ordinance on Thursday and would take a final vote in October.
