JEFFERSON -- Jefferson has a long way to go to equal Commerce in their 69-year rivalry. But the Dragons are doing their best to catch up.

Jefferson scored four unanswered touchdowns -- three in the second quarter -- to secure a 28-3 victory over the Tigers at Memorial Stadium. It was Jefferson's seventh win in the last eight years against the Tigers, who lead the series 42-22-5.

Dragons quarterback Evan Shirreffs provided much of the damage, tossing scoring passes to Hunter Gatlin, Dalton Hill and Ethan Garner. Colby Wood also chipped in with a seven-yard touchdown run, as Jefferson (4-0) pulled away for the victory.

Shirreffs finished the game 7 of 16 for 134 yards and an interception.

Commerce pounded out 197 yards of rushing and took a 3-0 lead on a 27-yard field goal from Andres Salgado, but the Tigers (2-1) could not stop a Jefferson attack that rolled up 275 yards.

Commerce will look to bounce back next week against Athens Academy.

Jefferson will take a bye next week before taking on Jackson County in the start of Region 8-AAA play on Sept. 26.
