HOMER -- Fourteen games is a long time in high school football terms.

Now Banks County can put two-plus seasons of frustration firmly in the past after the Leopards halted a 14-game skid that reached back into the 2012 season courtesy a 28-24 defeat of Johnson on Friday in Homer.

Banks County (1-1) needed every ounce of effort to clinch a comeback over the Knights (0-3), who raced to a 14-0 halftime lead and held a 24-13 advantage in the fourth quarter.

"It speaks volumes about these kids and their heart," Leopards coach Biff Parson said. "We challenged them at the half, and the seniors got the team together and they responded. It was just an incredible effort."

Malcolm Mitchell provided plenty of the boost for that effort, returning a kickoff for a touchdown and hauling in a 50-yard touchdown catch. He also proved huge on defense and twice flipped the field with clutch punt returns.

Travae Cain also came up big for Banks County, scoring two rushing touchdowns, including the clinching score.

"The offensive and defensive line went out there and played really well in key moments," Parson said.

Banks County will play host to East Jackson next week.

Johnson will travel to face Lumpkin County next week.
