MACON, Ga. (AP) -- A law expected to be implemented in 2015 will allow state and local court systems to recoup unpaid fines from Georgians' state income tax returns.

Assistant Director for the Georgia Administrative Office of the Courts Mike Cuccaro tells the Telegraph of Macon (http://bit.ly/1rMruas ) similar laws that have been implemented in other states have generated about $2 million in annual collections.

Clint Mueller of the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia says the collection procedure will only apply to court-related debts that are more than 90 days old and can be matched to the person's Social Security number.

Mueller says those who owe old court debts need to be notified of the new law in advance and will be given a chance to appeal.
