CUMMING - A Cumming man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges related to dragging a dog behind his vehicle while driving.

According to Deputy Robin Regan, the Forsyth's County Sheriff's Office received the initial 911 call just after 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. The caller reported seeing a pickup truck driving on Ronald Reagan Boulevard near State Route 141, dragging behind it a German Shepherd that was leashed to the vehicle.

Regan said roughly two minutes later, an unmarked police vehicle spotted the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on Ronald Reagan Blvd. at Majors Road. Additional deputies responded to the scene and quickly determined that the animal was in need of immediate veterinary treatment.

The dog was rushed to a local animal hospital, where it was treated for injuries to its front paws and neck.

The driver of the vehicle, 41-year-old Miguel Lechuga Sanchez, was arrested at the scene and transported to the Forsyth County Detention Center. He has been charged with D.U.I., animal cruelty and driving on a suspended license. Regan said all of those charges are misdemeanors.

The bond amount for Sanchez was set at $4,680.50, and Regan said the suspect remains in custody.
