Emory University probed for Title IX compliance

ATLANTA -- The U.S. Department of Education says Emory University is being investigated for the way it responds to complaints of sexual violence and harassment.<br />

The Department's Office for Civil Rights on Thursday named Emory as one of 55 colleges nationwide that is being probed for Title IX compliance and enforcement.<br />
<br />
In a statement, Emory University officials said the department is also reviewing the school's sexual assault prevention, outreach, support and education programs. Emory spokeswoman Beverly Cox Clark says the school works to build a safe community and takes all complaints and accusations of sexual misconduct seriously.<br />
<br />
The Department of Education's Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon says federal officials hope that publishing the list of schools under investigation will prompt community discussions on the issue.
