Quantavious Thompson was taken into custody late Wednesday afternoon, FBI spokeswoman Shelley Lynch said in a statement. Details on his arrest weren't immediately available.
Authorities said 63-year-old Frank Janssen was kidnapped April 5 from his home in Wake Forest, N.C., and driven roughly 400 miles to Atlanta, where he was held for five days before his rescue. The kidnapping was retaliation for the prosecution of Kelvin Melton, a high-ranking Bloods street gang member, investigators have said.
Authorities have accused at least eight people, including Melton, in the kidnapping.
Thompson was scheduled to make his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon. Thompson is known as ``Kirkwood Quan.'' Kirkwood is a neighborhood in Atlanta. A phone message left for an attorney who was assigned to represent Thompson wasn't immediately returned Thursday.
Janssen's kidnappers called his wife and made demands to benefit Melton, who's serving a life sentence in a North Carolina prison for his involvement in a 2011 shooting, authorities said. Janssen's daughter, Wake County Assistant District Attorney Colleen Janssen, prosecuted the case. Melton has also been charged in the kidnapping.
Authorities have said the FBI monitored a phone call Melton placed from his prison cell to an Atlanta phone number linked to the kidnappers and talked about how to kill Janssen and dispose of his body. When corrections officers tried entering his cell, Melton smashed the phone and Janssen was found alive in Atlanta hours later.
Investigators have said they're searching for another suspect, Jakym Tibbs, who is considered armed and dangerous.
