ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Some faculty and staff members are trying to get the University of Georgia to broaden its family leave policy.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1lPD0hv ) that a request from the human resources committee of the UGA University Council states that the university's policy is outdated and not in line with more family-friendly policies at many other universities.

The group is proposing a study of UGA's "maternity leave" policy and the development of a new "parental leave policy" that would replace it.

Human resources committee member Janet Frick said that some departments at the University of Georgia handle maternity leave in a "very family-friendly way" but some do not.

The proposal will go back to the human resources committee so that they can offer specific recommendations.
