LULA - Only one candidate qualified this week for a special election May 20 to fill a vacancy on the Lula City Council.

James Garnett Smith is 69 and has been a resident of Hall County all his life.

He will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Norm Harrop which was effective March 31. City Manager Dennis Bergin said at the time Harrop's plans were announced earlier this year it was the city's understanding that his family would be relocating to another part of the country.

Qualifying closed Wednesday.
