911 dispatcher helps own father on 1st day of job

TUCKER, Ga. (AP) A Georgia 911 operator is being nominated for a national award for training a colleague, who took a call from her own family during her first day on the job and helped dispatch an ambulance to her father.

DeKalb County dispatcher Crystal Morrow tells WAGA-TV that she was surprised when she heard a familiar voice -- her aunt -- on the other end of an emergency call. Morrow's father had gone into diabetic shock.

Morrow said she walked her aunt through what she had to do, and also sent ambulance to her father during the call on Aug. 6, 2013.

Operator Danielle Harvey, who had trained Morrow, is now a finalist in the third annual Smart Telecommunicator Awards from Framingham, Mass.-based technology firm Rave Mobile Safety.
