March Madness, my way

Even with all the upsets during the first four days of March Madness this year, I think the whole thing would be a lot more interesting if the initial match-ups were decided at random.

It has always seemed to me that the "deck is stacked" in favor of the favorites - the top seeds - to insure that they don't play each other in the opening rounds.

Why not decide the pairings by using something like a Wheel of Fortune wheel? Put all the eligible teams on the wheel and spin it and let the chips fall where they may.

Wouldn't that make it more interesting? So what if two or more top or near-the-top seeds end up playing each other early on? Right now you have 16th seeds playing top seeds to begin with - with, in most cases, the lower seeds getting eliminated right away and usually by lopsided scores. Oh, I know, there are the Mercers and Butlers and VCUs that come along and beat the odds but by and large that is not the case.

So that said, my "dream" Final Four this year would have been Mercer, Weber State, Stephen F. Austin and Wofford or some similar quartet. Until the system is changed, it's not going to happen. It'll always be the Dukes, Michigan States, Arizonas, Floridas, etc. Again, with an occasional Mercer, Butler, VCU slipping in. Boring.

Are you listening NCAA?

Better yet, are listening CBS? Because we all know who's really pulling the strings.

(Ken Stanford is the retired longtime Newsroom Manager for WDUN-AM, WDUN-FM, 1240 ESPN, and AccessNorthGa.com.)
