Ron Evans: Marching To The Music

Ron Evans was a Georgia country boy, and I mean that as a high compliment. Every now and then somebody in the teaching world lifts up out of nowhere and makes a memorable mark about their part of education. It causes the rest of us to say: "This is important. This is a cause worth supporting. This is a career path my child might follow." These people do not come from the Juliard in New York. They are one of us, but because of them, their specialty lifts the entire culture of our area. Such was the life of Ron Evans in Northeast Georgia. While he was band director at South Hall and then Johnson High some of us went to football games to see and hear his band. And again at Gainesville High. His bands marched in parades in New York and Washington and other cities. And though he loved the music of John Philip Sousa, that wasn't all he taught. His kids played the popular music, and many went on to study music or played in college bands. He was involved in the community, and when he retired he led in putting together the Northwinds Symphonic Band, a group of area music professionals
