Overnight forecasters at the federal agency expressed awe as they watched the forecast turn to reality. They wrote in a memo on the weather setup that "we are watching a winter storm of historical significance beginning to unfold on the midnight shift."
Forecasters say there remained some uncertainty about where the heaviest ice would falls, but amounts along the Interstate 20 corridor east of Atlanta "are bumped up a little" to over an inch, they said in the memo issued before dawn Wednesday.
Around a foot of snow could fall in some parts of the northeast Georgia mountains. But they said it is the ice that will have the "catastrophic impacts."
