ATLANTA (AP) -- State Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens says Georgians dealing with damage to their house or car as a result of the winter storm should contact their insurance agents immediately.

Hudgens says agents should provide consumers with claims forms immediately and arrange for an adjuster to appraise damaged property. Hudgens encourages consumers to take photographs of damaged property to submit along with their claims.

Hudgens is also reminding Georgia drivers to use extreme caution as snow and ice coat local roads, because inclement weather doesn't excuse drivers of liability in car crashes.

He added that renters should consider buying renters' insurance to cover personal belongings because apartment managers and landlords aren't responsible for damages unless they're proven to have been negligent.

ADVICE FROM GEORGIA EMERGENCY MGT.
