White County Sheriff's Office Capt. Tim Chapman said that Monday morning Cpl. Sims was attempting to stop a 2003 Chevy pickup in Helen for a canceled registration. The driver kept going traveling north of Helen, turning onto Tray Mountain Road. The officer noticed the driver turning into a small drive, but lost sight of the suspect and could only follow the tracks.
According to Chapman, the officer did locate the vehicle, but by that time the driver had fled the scene on foot. A K-9 unit was called to the scene, but was unable to locate the subject.
The case remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.
