Drought conditions have returned to north Georgia despite two or more inches of rain in many places early last week.

The U.S. Drought Monitor, in it weekly report on Thursday, said the drought has returned to a few counties in north Georgia and a large swath of counties extending from near Bainbridge north to Columbus and northeastward to the Augusta area.

In northeast Georgia, parts of Rabun, Towns, Union, Fannin, Banks and Hall counties are among the affected areas. Conditions in those counties are described in the report as "abnormally dry." But in nine of the counties in middle Georgia, things are slightly worse. Those counties, the drought monitor says, are experiencing a "moderate drought."

In Hall County, only a small corner of the southern part of the county is included.
It remains to be seen what impact this weekend's rains will have on those areas where drought conditions have returned.
