Suwanee man sentenced in healthcare fraud case

ATLANTA - A U.S. District Court judge Monday sentenced a Suwanee man to two years, nine months in prison in a healthcare fraud case, according to a federal prosecutor.<br /> <br /> Shinkweon (Shin) Park, 43, was convicted almost a year ago, on January 6. for conspiring to commit healthcare fraud, according to United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.<br /> <br /> Park owned and operated the LOMA Clinic in Norcross. According to Yates, Park filed over $2 million in fraudulent claims between November 2009 and May 2012. The claims included $1.6 million to Medicare and $475,000 to Blue Cross Blue Shield.<br /> <br /> "Shin Park used his position to take advantage of the Medicare program by submitting fraudulent claims for services he never rendered for hundreds of Medicare beneficiaries who placed their trust in him to do the right thing," Special Agent in Charge Derrick L. Jackson of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, Atlanta Regional Office said in an email statement.<br /> <br /> According to Yates, Park submitted claims for acupuncture treatments which were not reimbursable. LOMA billed Medicare for massage and physical therapy services that were not performed by licensed physical therapists or physical therapy assistants. Yates said LOMA used its doctor's provider code to submit claims, without the doctor ever having treated or examined patients.<br /> <br /> Park's sentence includes the prison time, followed by three years supervised release and nearly $1.2 million restitution.
