N. Korea seeks UN meeting on CIA torture

NUNITED NATIONS (AP) -- North Korea is asking the United Nations Security Council to put the CIA's harsh treatment of terror suspects on its agenda for debate. <br /> <br /> North Korea's U.N. Ambassador Ja Song Nam made the request in a letter to Chad's U.N. ambassador, the current council president. <br /> <br /> The letter released Monday objected to the Security Council's decision to include North Korea's human rights record on its agenda the first step toward a possible referral to the International Criminal Court. <br /> <br /> Instead, Ja said the council should take up ``the recently revealed CIA torture crimes.'' The ambassador called the torture ``the gravest human rights violation in the world.'' <br /> <br /> North Korea's human rights situation was placed on the council agenda after two-thirds of its members requested it. A spokesman for Chad's U.N. Mission said the debate would occur on Dec. 22 or 23.
