Stocks open slightly higher a day after a big drop

NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. stocks are opening slightly higher as the market bounces back from its biggest drop since October.<br />

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 75 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,607 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time Thursday. Less than an hour later it was up 173 points. The Dow fell 268 points the day before, its worst drop in two months.<br />

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 12 points, or 0.6 percent, to 2,039 - but was up 21 points by 10:15. The Nasdaq composite rose 31 points as the market opend, or 0.7 percent, to 4,715 - and had gained 53 points just before 10:30.
