Boys basketball: Gainesville routs Cedar Shoals

GAINESVILLE -- Gainesville opened with a 9-0 run and never looked back in taking a 73-47 win over Cedar Shoals on Tuesday night in Region 8-AAAAA action at the Gainesville gym.<br /> <br /> D'Marcus Simonds poured in 21 points to lead the Red Elephants (6-0, 2-0 Region 8-AAAAA). Luke Maddox added 18 points for Gainesville.<br /> <br /> Cedar Shoals (5-2, 2-1) used an 8-3 run to pull within 12-8 midway through the first quarter but could get no closer. Gainesville responded with an 18-2 run into the second quarter for a 30-10 lead.<br /> <br /> The Red Elephants led 40-21 at halftime. They blew it open in the third quarter with a 26-15 run to lead 66-36 heading into the fourth quarter.<br /> <br /> Gainesville next will travel to Clarke Central on Friday in another big battle to stay atop the region standings in the early going.
