UNG in magazine's 'military friendly' guide for fifth year

DAHLONEGA - The University of North Georgia (UNG) has been designated as a top school by Military Advanced Education (MAE) in its "2015 MAE Guide to Colleges & Universities," which measures best practices in military and veteran education. The guide will be released in the December issue of MAE, and is available online at www.mae-kmi.com. <br /> <br /> "The University of North Georgia has a long-standing heritage of educating future military officers, as well as supporting veterans, active duty service members, and their families in their educational goals," said university President Bonita C. Jacobs. "This 'military friendly' designation is a symbol of that commitment."<br /> <br /> The guide presents results of a questionnaire of the military-supportive policies at more than 600 institutions.<br /> <br /> This year, institutes were evaluated on their military culture, financial aid, flexibility, on-campus support and online support services.<br /> <br /> "We believe the guide serves as an invaluable tool for both education services officers and transition officers when advising servicemembers about their educational opportunities," said Kelly Fodel, MAE's editor. "We designed this database with the military student in mind. We want to help them make informed choices, so we are giving them access to all the survey questions and answers provided by the schools, as well as explanations about critical issues like activation and deployment policies, withdrawal policies, scholarship and financial aid information and important support information."<br /> <br /> Designated by the Georgia General Assembly as The Military College of Georgia, UNG's Corps of Cadets comprises 800 cadets, and each year some 70 to 80 graduating cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants into the U.S. Army or the Georgia National Guard. In addition to its status as The Military College of Georgia and one of only six senior military colleges in the country, UNG has several initiatives aimed at assisting active duty service members and veterans:<br /> <br /> *The Center for Adult Learners and Military (CALM) serves as a one-stop shop as service members or their families on all four UNG campuses enroll, register, or apply for GI Bill benefits and other financial aid. CALM's resource centers on the Dahlonega and Gainesville campuses also serve as a hub for military student and veteran social activities and offer assistance with tutoring, academic advising, and other services and resources.<br /> <br /> *UNG awards college credit for military training, accepts transfer credits, and offers distance learning and online classes, all initiatives identified in the state's Complete College Georgia plans. At least two graduate degree programs, criminal justice and international affairs, are offered completely online.<br /> <br /> *UNG also is part of Georgia's Soldiers 2 Scholars program, which helps service members transition to civilian life by means of a college degree, and the 1,900-member Service members Opportunity Colleges (SOC) coalition, which provides educational opportunities to service members who had trouble completing college degrees because they moved frequently.<br /> <br /> In addition to the MAE ranking, UNG consistently is recognized by GI Jobs magazine, Military Times magazine and U.S. News & World Report as military friendly and best for veterans.<br /> <br /> Published since 2005, Military Advanced Education is aimed at military education service officers, transition officers and other top-level commands who work with service members, veterans and their families during active duty, transition, and post-transition to optimize their armed forces educational benefits.
