Incoming GA schools chief lays out priorities

ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia's incoming Schools Superintendent Richard Woods says he has a long list of lofty goals when he takes office in January.<br /> <br /> Woods spoke to the Georgia School Boards Association at their annual conference on Friday. Woods was elected in November and will replace John Barge, who did not run for a second term.<br /> <br /> Woods says he wants to consider fewer tests and prefers students take exams at the start of the school year. He also wants to improve Georgia students' reading and math skills by certain grade levels.<br /> <br /> Woods says all of that depends on communicating with educators and with other state elected officials including Gov. Nathan Deal. Deal and Barge often clashed, and Barge challenged the incumbent unsuccessfully in the GOP primary.<br /> <br /> Woods takes office on Jan. 12.
