UNG women's soccer places four on All-Region team

DAHLONEGA -- The winningest team in North Georgia soccer history set yet another school record on Monday with the announcement of the 2014 Daktronics All-Southeast Region Team. The UNG women's soccer program earned four spots on the honorary squad with Sophia Matonak, Megan Morrow and Cicely Taliaferro all earning first-team honors, while Rachel VanHorn was selected to the second-team.<br /> <br /> The four selections in a single season is a program best. UNG garnered three All-Region selections in both 2011 and 2012. North Georgia, Columbus State and Wingate earned the most first-team selections with three each.<br /> <br /> Taliaferro, the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year and Brine Golden Ball Award winner, tied two single season records for the Nighthawks, equaling marks set last season by Kelly Penston for goals (18) and points (41). The senior from Marietta finished her career with 31 goals, which is second best in program history. The All-Region selection is the third for Taliaferro.<br /> <br /> Morrow, a senior from Snellville, led the PBC in assists with 12 this season - the second highest mark in school history. The defender finished her career with 22 assists, which ranks second all-time in North Georgia history.<br /> <br /> Matonak, a sophomore from Monroe, ranked in the top 10 in the PBC in all four major offensive categories (goals, assists, points and shots). She also earned First-Team All-Conference honors for the first time this season.<br /> <br /> VanHorn, a freshman from Marietta, was the top-scoring freshman in the Peach Belt this season and the second leading goal scorer on the nation's highest scoring offense this year.
