UNG announces fall commencement plans; ceremonies to be held on Dahlonega, Gainesville campuses

DAHLONEGA - The University of North Georgia (UNG) will hold fall commencement ceremonies for graduates of all colleges on Dec. 13-14 at the university's Dahlonega and Gainesville campuses.<br /> <br /> Tickets are required to attend each ceremony. Students who have applied for fall graduation can pick up graduation packets, which include their designated number of tickets, beginning Monday, Dec. 8 at the bookstore on their home campus. Students should read all information and instructions included in the graduation packet.<br /> <br /> Two ceremonies will be held Saturday, Dec. 13 in Memorial Hall Gymnasium on the Dahlonega Campus for graduates whose designated home campus is either Cumming or Dahlonega. A ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. for graduates of the College of Science & Mathematics, the College of Health Science & Professions and the Mike Cottrell College of Business. A ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. for graduates of the College of Arts & Letters, College of Education and University College.<br /> <br /> One ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14 at the Hugh Mills Physical Education Complex on the Gainesville Campus for all graduates whose designated home campus is Gainesville or Oconee.<br /> <br /> The guest speaker for both Dahlonega commencement ceremonies is retired Maj. Gen. Maria Britt, associate vice president for operations at Kennesaw State University. Britt previously served as commanding general of Georgia's 11,000 Army National Guard soldiers. In July, she was awarded the fourth-highest military award, the Distinguished Service Medal, by U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson for her leadership as commanding general.<br /> <br /> Britt, of Acworth, Georgia, commissioned as a second lieutenant from the U.S. Military Academy in 1983 as part of the fourth graduating class with women. She holds a bachelor's degree in engineering and master's degrees in strategic intelligence and strategic studies.<br /> <br /> The guest speaker for the Gainesville commencement ceremony is Doug Carter, president of Don Carter Realty Co., a 50-year-old, family-owned company. A Gainesville native, Carter has served as a member of the Competitiveness Initiative Task Force and the board of the Technical College System of Georgia, both appointments by Gov. Nathan Deal. In 2011, he served as chairman of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.<br /> <br /> Carter also has led a number of organizations, including Northeast Georgia Medical Center, the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, and the North Georgia Community Foundation. He currently is a member of the Economic Development Council and the Redevelopment Authority in Hall County. Carter graduated cum laude from Wake Forest University. <br /> <br /> Separate commissioning ceremonies will also be held Friday, Dec. 12 beginning at 4 p.m. for members of the Corps of Cadets entering the armed forces as second lieutenants. The individual commissioning ceremonies will be held in the atrium of the Brooks Pennington Jr. Military Leadership Center. A reception for commissioning cadets will be held immediately before each ceremony in room 112 of the Military Leadership Center.<br /> <br /> UNG officials say all graduates have been instructed to arrive 45 minutes ahead of their commencement ceremony for lineup; graduates and their guests should allow extra time for travel as the commencement venues and surrounding areas are typically congested on graduation days.<br /> <br /> For more information about fall commencement, including parking details, ceremony guidelines and specific instructions for graduates, visit UNG's commencement website at www.ung.edu/commencement/index.php.
