Jacobs Media set to cover all angles on another big postseason night

And then there were six... Six area football programs will do battle on Friday in the state football playoffs, including five in the second round -- and the various outlets of Jacobs Media will be on hand to cover all the angles.

Gainesville football won its seventh straight first round playoff game last week -- and the Red Elephants showed plenty of heart and talent to do so, holding off Creekview 42-37 in the Class AAAAA bracket.

Gainesville's reward is a second round berth at Harris County -- a rematch of a 2012 quarterfinal game that the Red Elephants won en route to the state crown and one that will be broadcast live on 1240 AM ESPN Radio.

Harris County (9-2) is making its third straight second round appearance and enters the showdown with the Red Elephants (9-2) on the back of a nine-game win streak. The Tigers edged out Warner Robins 33-31 in the first round -- their closest victory of the season.

This week's contest promises plenty of scoring, as Harris County relies on offense averaging 40 points per game, while Gainesville is putting up 36 points per game.

The Red Elephants attack showed it is at its peak in last week's win, rolling up 422 total yards, including 226 yards rushing for senior Michael Byrd. Gainesville's defense, meanwhile, came up with key turnovers against an equally-prolific attack -- a factor that could come into play again this week.

When it comes to prolific, not many offenses have been able to equal Jefferson's -- certainly not in Class AAA. The Dragons (11-0) are averaging 41 points per game behind a balanced aerial and ground attack -- yet they know they will face a strong test in this week's second round.

Dodge County, the No. 3 seed from Region 1-AAA, allowed just a field goal in its first round 14-3 win over Westside (Macon) and is yielding 16 points per game. It should make for an intriguing match-up when the two face-off on Friday in a game broadcast live on WDUN 102.9 FM.

The Indians have also put up decent scoring numbers, averaging 27 ppg. They will face a Dragons defense allowing a minuscule 9 ppg -- in fact no team has scored more than 16 points on Jefferson.

Both programs come from dominant regions -- all of 8-AAAs and 1-AAAs teams won in the first round. And fans can expect a slugfest as Jefferson looks for a third straight state quarterfinal bid and Dodge guns for its first third round berth since 1999.

Buford, meanwhile, has not missed the state quarterfinals since 1999, and the Wolves (11-0) will aim for a 15th straight quarterfinal berth when they play host to Mary Persons (9-2) on Friday in a game broadcast live on WDUN AM 550.

The Wolves cruised through their first round game, 63-0 over Southeast Whitfield, while Mary Persons blanked Westover 14-0 in the Class AAAA first round.

The Bulldogs feature a stout defense that has pitched four shutouts this campaign, while Buford is scoring 48 ppg. The Wolves have overwhlemed most foes at the point of attack, with a number of backs doing the damage -- Xavier Gantt took center stage in the first round, rushing for 140 yards and 3 TDs.

And while fans and pundits may be looking ahead to a potential quarterfinal match-up with the winner of Marist at Griffin -- Buford's players and coaches know they cannot afford to look ahead.

Elsewhere, Stephens County (8-3) will travel to West Laurens (8-3) in another Class AAAA battle after the Indians claimed their first playoff victory since 2011. Stephens County is looking for its first quarterfinal berth since 2005.

In Class AA, Rabun County is in the midst of its best season since 1998 -- and the Wildcats (9-2) want to keep things going when Benedictine (9-2) of Savannah makes the long trek north. A win for the Wildcats would equal their best ever postseason run (a quarterfinal appearance in 1998).

And in Class A, Commerce gets its postseason going when the Tigers (8-2) play host to Clinch County (6-4) in the "Public" half of the bracket. Commerce will gun for its first state playoff win since 2009.

It should be another huge night for area prep football, and Jacobs Media will have it all covered, via the airwaves and on our Friday Game Night page, where we will update scores as well as post game stories and video highlights from all the night's action.

SECOND ROUND* STATE PLAYOFF MATCH-UPS
Nov. 21
*-Class A will be competing in its first round match-ups
Class AAAAA
Gainesville at Harris County -- Radio: 1240 AM

Class AAAA
Mary Persons at Buford -- Radio: AM 550
Stephens County at West Laurens

Class AAA
Dodge County at Jefferson -- Radio: 102.9 FM

Class AA
Benedictine at Rabun County

Class A
Clinch County at Commerce
