Big week for area athletes as early signing period gets underway

This week marked the start of the early signing period for collegiate athletics, and a number of northeast Georgia standouts took advantage, inking Letters of Intent to play at the next level.<br /> <br /> Buford softball, in particular, enjoyed a big day, as six Lady Wolves committed their futures -- <br /> Bria Bush signed with Tennessee, Tessa Daniels with Florida State, Jordan Deep with Georgia Tech, Remington Hasty with Georgia State, Alexus Murray with Maryville College and Sydney Stavro with Georgia Tech.<br /> <br /> But the group was far from alone. Buford baseball also inked six players -- Joey Bart with Georgia Tech, Connor Bennett with West Virginia, Kevin Coulter with Mercer, Keyton Gibson with Georgia Tech, Jake Higginbotham with Clemson and Caleb Moore with Young Harris. Lady Wolves basketball standout Camille Anderson also signed with N.C. State, and soccer star Brooke Horist inked with Coastal Carolina. Steven Wysocki also signed it play golf for Central Alabama.<br /> <br /> Sports stars at Gainesville, East Hall, West Hall, White County and elsewhere also enjoyed the day's events.<br /> <br /> White County's Kristen Mitchell signed to run cross country and track at Lee's McRae in North Carolina. Mitchell helped White County cross country to three straight region titles and three straight state podium appearances. She was the 2014 Class AAA runner up in the 800 meters and third in the 1,600 as a sophomore. <br /> <br /> East Hall senior Kali Turner signed with the University of North Georgia to play softball, beginning with the 2015-16 school year.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, West Hall's Elliott Raiford signed a letter of intent to wrestle for Appalachian State University.<br /> <br /> Gainesville also saw a banner class, as Michael Curry (baseball, University of Georgia), Caleb Whittenton (baseball, University of South Carolina), Luke Maddox (baseball, University of Mississippi), Kayla Street (softball, Georgia Highlands College), Colin Monaghan (swimming, University of Georgia), Lawson King (golf, University of Western Carolina) and Nathan Williams (golf, Georgia State University) were also honored as signees.<br /> <br /> <i>NOTE: If you have any signing day photos you would like published, please email the picture and pertinent information to sports director Morgan Lee at [email protected].</i>
