Boys basketball: Johnson wins season opener

MILTON -- Ty Cockfield poured in 38 points to lead the Johnson boys to a 72-60 win over Cambridge Friday night in both teams' season opener.<br /> <br /> The Knights (1-0) used a big first half to take the lead and then held off the Bears (0-1) in the second half.<br /> <br /> Johnson led 19-14 after the first quarter and pushed the lead to 37-24 by halftime. The Bears pulled within 52-43 by the end of the third quarter by the Knights pulled away in the final eight minutes to secure the victory.<br /> <br /> Rodrick English added 24 points and nine rebounds and DeMonte Nichols dished out seven assists for the Knights. <br /> <br /> Cambridge was paced by Jordan Slater with 20 points and Emerson McLung with 15 points.<br /> <br /> Johnson next will play host to Lumpkin County on Tuesday.
