ATLANTA (AP) -- A challenge to the City of Atlanta using taxpayer revenue to finance a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons is being heard by the Georgia Supreme Court.

The state's high court heard oral arguments Monday from a group of Atlanta residents trying to block the city from issuing $200 million in bonds for the stadium, which is expected to cost roughly $1.2 billion.

The group of Atlanta residents argues that issuing the bonds is unconstitutional because of an amendment that was made to a 2010 state law governing the use of the city's hotel-motel taxes. Among other things, the group also argues that city officials weren't authorized to extend the hotel-motel tax law without certification that didn't come until after they had voted on the issue.
