Cross country: Flowery Branch sweeps 8-AAAAA titles

CONYERS -- Both Flowery Branch cross country teams came away with Region 8-AAAAA titles Saturday at the Georgia International Horse Park.<br /> <br /> It was especially big for the Lady Falcons, who snapped the streak of four straight region championships by Winder-Barrow. The Flowery Branch girls tallied just 24 points as all five runners finished in the top 10. Loganville took second with 60 points, Winder-Barrow was third with 67 points, and Clarke Central was fourth with 125 points.<br /> <br /> "It's a great feeling to do this and win both titles. We haven;t done that in a long time in the same year," Flowery Branch coach Jimmy Sorrells said. "It was a great effort by both groups."<br /> <br /> Winder-Barrow's Micah Weathers won the individual girls race with a winning time of 20:59.28 edging out four Lady Falcons runners. Freshman Mariah Millsap was second, Cassie Ward was third, Haley Pierson, and Shannon Hoolahan was fifth with all four finishing within 17 seconds of each other.<br /> <br /> The top four teams move on to next week's state meet in Carrollton. Gainesville's Brenna Fair also qualified for the state meet with a seventh-place finish.<br /> <br /> In the boys competition, Flowery Branch took the title with 31 points with four runners finishing in the top seven and all five in the top 16. Gainesville was second with 88 points, Cedar Shoals was third with 105 points, and Apalachee fourth with 111 points.<br /> <br /> The Falcons' Jake Shewbert won the individual race with a 16:36.55 time holding off Gainesville's Juan Ortega by 13 seconds. Flowery Branch's Grant O'Callaghan and Shawn Olmstead took third and fourth.<br /> <br /> Christopher Tromp of Lanier qualified for state with a 10th place finish.
