WEEK 10: Plenty of treats for area squads -- two big streaks broken

You could hear the relief in the voice of Apalachee coach Shane Davis -- and you could feel it echoing through the radio from Mt. Airy. It was a big night for the Wildcats and Habersham Central, which each smashed long losing streaks on Friday.

The wins -- Apalachee defeating Cedar Shoals 28-17 to end an 18-game skid and Habersham handling North Forsyth 32-7 to halt a 21-game freefall -- were just part of a huge (and frigid) night in Week 10 of high school football throughout northeast Georgia.

Perhaps the result of the night came in Sugar Hill, where Lanier wrapped up its first ever region championship, bouncing back to defeat Winder-Barrow 21-10 in Region 8-AAAAA. Yet the loss didn't keep the Bulldoggs from notching their own big result, as Clarke Central also won on the night to clinch Winder's first state playoff berth in 10 years.

Region 7-AAA also some interesting scores, as West Hall fought back from an early deficit to knock off Banks County 23-7. Meanwhile, Lumpkin County blasted Dawson County 42-19 in Dahlonega to set up a winner-take-all showdown between the Indians and Spartans next Friday in Oakwood. East Hall also took a big step toward the postseason, fending off Fannin County 38-20 amidst snow flurries and sleet in Blue Ridge.

Meanwhile, in Region 7-AAAAAA, Mill Creek planted its foot in the postseason courtesy a dominant 30-0 defeat of Norcross, holding the Blue Devils to 39 total yards. North Gwinnett also forged toward a No. 1 seed with a 50-6 defeat of Meadowcreek.

In Region 8-AAAA, North Oconee bounced back from a lopsided loss to Buford to seal a 21-14 overtime win at Stephens County
