ATHENS -- Gainesville battled back from a slow start to blow past Cedar Shoals in the second half on Friday in Athens.

The Red Elephants trailed for much of the first half but bounced back to notch a 61-26 victory.

Gainesville's offense produced its most prolific night of the season so far, putting up 632 total yards -- including a career night for quarterback Mikey Gonzalez, who completed 22 of 31 passes for 457 yards -- 10 of those completions went to Messiah Dorsey, who finished with 234 yards receiving. Rodney Lackey also caught six passes for 118 yards, while Michael Byrd rushed 16 times for 116 yards.

Gainesville's win, combined with Lanier's victory over Salem put a dent in the Red Elephants' region title hopes, but Gainesville (6-2, 6-1 Region 8-AAAAA) is in firm control of the No. 2 spot in Region 8-AAAAA.

Cedar Shoals (0-8, 0-7) finished with 402 yards on Friday, led by 243 yards rushing. Quarterback Greg Smith did much of the damage, rushing for 76 yards and passing for 159.

The Red Elephants will play host to Loganville in their final regular season home game next Friday at City Park.
