ATHENS -- Gainesville battled back from a slow start to blow past Cedar Shoals in the second half on Friday in Athens.<br />

The Red Elephants trailed for much of the first half but bounced back to notch a 61-26 victory.<br />

Gainesville's offense produced its most prolific night of the season so far, putting up 632 total yards -- including a career night for quarterback Mikey Gonzalez, who completed 22 of 31 passes for 457 yards -- 10 of those completions went to Messiah Dorsey, who finished with 234 yards receiving. Rodney Lackey also caught six passes for 118 yards, while Michael Byrd rushed 16 times for 116 yards.<br />

Gainesville's win, combined with Lanier's victory over Salem put a dent in the Red Elephants' region title hopes, but Gainesville (6-2, 6-1 Region 8-AAAAA) is in firm control of the No. 2 spot in Region 8-AAAAA.<br />

Cedar Shoals (0-8, 0-7) finished with 402 yards on Friday, led by 243 yards rushing. Quarterback Greg Smith did much of the damage, rushing for 76 yards and passing for 159.<br />
<br />
The Red Elephants will play host to Loganville in their final regular season home game next Friday at City Park.
