GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Police Department has released the names of those involved in a fatal plane crash near Lee Gilmer Airport Thursday morning.

Gainesville Police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said the pilot of the craft, 74-year-old Lawrence Youhanaian of Gainesville, died at the scene on Palmour Drive.

His passenger, 50-year-old Kelly Chandler, suffered serious burns in the crash. A passerby was able to pull Chandler from the wreckage of the 1976 Rockwell Commander 112, according to Holbrook.

Chandler, at last report, remained at Grady Hospital's Burn Center in Atlanta.

Holbrook said local authorities worked on the investigation through the weekend with officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration. He said it would take some time for the investigation to be complete.

Holbrook said initial findings indicate there was a mechanical malfunction on the plane, and Youhanaian had turned the plane back toward Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport when the craft went down.
