GAINESVILLE - Approximately 2,000 Special Olympics athletes and coaches will be in Hall County next weekend (Oct. 10-12) for the 2014 State Fall Games, and volunteers are needed to assist with the various events.

Volunteers to help with scoring, crowd control and more are needed as the athletes compete in bocce, softball, cycling and golf at various locations, including North Hall Park, Laurel Park, Chicopee Woods Golf Course and Gainesville Middle School.

Special Olympics Georgia announced the selection of Hall County as host of the 2014, 2015 and 2016 games last November.

Nearly 2,000 coaches and athletes are expected to travel to the area for these games, which will offer a boost to Hall County's retailers and hotel industry. Those involved in the Special Olympics will likely spend nearly $500,000 in the community during their stay on lodging, food, and special events, according to organizers. Athletes, families, and spectators are expected to spend at least an additional $150,000 on entertainment and transportation expenses.
The competition is free and open to the public.
