DAWSONVILLE - An unusual investigation in Dawson County has local authorities hoping the Georgia Bureau of Investigation can shed some light on the identity of some human bones found in the Dawson County Landfill.

Dawson County Sheriff's Office Major Tony Wooten said landfill workers discovered the bones in a bag dropped off at the landfill in August. Those workers called authorities.

Wooten said deputies and EMS personnel responded, determined there was potential the bones were human and requested the GBI for assistance.

Wooten said state authorities contacted them with test results this week.

"The bones indeed are that of a human, however they could be from years and years ago," Wooten said.

He added that there's a possibility the bones could date back to when Native Americans were settled in the area.

Wooten said GBI will work to cross reference the bones and DNA with any missing person cases that are open.

He said investigators were able to interview the people who left the bag at the landfill in August and that they were cooperative.

Wooten said they told deputies they found the bones on a visit to an island in Lake Allatoona.

"Their story is that they collected them years ago while on the small island and believed they were a horse because there was a horse skeleton right there."

For now, Wooten said investigators are waiting on the GBI to either rule out or find that the bones belong to someone in the database who is missing.

He said it could be a lengthy process.
