Republican Rep. Allen Peake of Macon introduced a bill Tuesday that would revive a long-dormant research program allowing academic institutions to distribute cannabis oil to those suffering from specific medical conditions.
Peake says the cannabis oil will be "limited in scope, tightly restricted, well regulated and managed by doctors."
Peake was joined by three families as he introduced the bill. The families say they hope the access to medical cannabis will ease their children's symptoms and improve their quality of life.
The bill drew more than 80 sponsors in the House, although Peake cautioned it's still a difficult road to get the bill passed and signed.
Earlier this month, an AccessNorthGa.com poll found overwhelming support for such a bill.
The question was:
Should Georgia legalize medical marijuana?
And these were the results:
Yes 2,259 or 74%
No 697 or 23%
Undecided 93 or 3%
