DAHLONEGA -- Brad Waggoner knew that if his team could just keep working, good things would come.

On Friday night, the Indians proved the first-year head coach right, nailing their first victory of the campaign, 31-19 over Walnut Grove in Dahlonega.

"We've got a bunch of young guys, and we had played four very tough games in a row, so we just had to keep working, keep getting better," Waggoner said. "We finally made the plays tonight."

The Indians (1-4, 1-1 Region 8-AAAA) rolled up 558 yards of offense, including a huge night for Jonathan Gilreath, who totalled 197 yards and three scores.

Lumpkin County showed its resiliency, fighting back from a 13-0 deficit to take a 14-13 halftime lead that they never relinquished.

"We didn't quit tonight, and the guys kept fighting," Waggoner said. "This was big for us. We're playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores."

Lumpkin County will take a bye next week before traveling to Madison County on Oct. 11.
