ATLANTA (AP) -- A candlelight vigil is planned in downtown Atlanta to push for U.S. Rep. John Lewis to vote against authorizing military intervention in Syria.

Organizers say demonstrators are expected to meet at Woodruff Park Monday at 7 p.m.

Syrian president, Bashar Assad, has denied allegations that he allowed the government to use chemical weapons against citizens in the country's civil war. The U.S. Senate is expected to vote Wednesday on a potential military strike.

In a release, one of the vigil's local organizers, Lee Slaughter, said the country has many tools at its disposal other than war that can be used to avoid a conflict in Syria.

Organizers say the vigil is part of a national day of action being organized by MoveOn.org Civic Action, Win Without War and other groups.
