The Gainesville Fire Department plans a special ceremony at 9:45 at the city's public safety complex on Queen City Parkway. The police department will also be participating. The public is invited to attend. Parking for the public will be behind the Gainesville Justice Center, directly off of Banks Street.
AT THE SCHOOLS
A number of schools in Gainesville and Hall County have special programs planned for Wednesday.
Inspired by the website 911day.org, Centennial Arts Academy will be working on a project from 12:00-1:30 Wednesday. Fifth-grade students will be packing care packages for several soldiers who are currently on active duty. In addition, they are writing letters and drawing pictures, and parents are sending in items like playing cards, beef jerky, cookies, etc. Some of the students in younger grades are making thank you cards and patriotic pictures to send to people in Gainesville who are currently part of the military reserves or who have served in the military in the past.
Sardis Enrichment School will have a special flag presentation at 8:05 Wednesday. The program will include a special reading of the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance. Then, a new flag - one that has flown over the White House - will be raised.
West Hall High School plans to do a special " three- or four-minute" report on the terrorist attacks as part of its regular in-house TV news report which uses a private YouTube channel and is sent to each classroom where teachers show it on their Digital Displays or through classroom projectors.
At Sugar Hill Elementary School, some fourth and fifth grade students will be engaging in some school-based service projects inspired by 911day.org, including skits educating other students about the event.
CORNELIA'S PLANS
In Cornelia, the Habersham Woodmen of the World will hold a ceremony of remembrance at 9:00, in conjunction with the Habersham County Wall of Honor Committee. There also will be an unveiling of the signage, flagpoles and flags as the first phase of the Habersham Wall of Honor.
The ceremony will take place at the Wall of Honor site, which is next to the Habersham Chamber of Commerce on Veterans Memorial Drive (across from Ethicon) in Cornelia.
SUWANEE'S PLANS
Suwanee will hold a brief dedication ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for an artistic display created to memorialize 9-11-2001. The display, created by Statesboro artist Marc Moulton, features a damaged, twisted relic from one of the World Trade Center towers, which was given to Suwanee a couple of years ago by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Since unveiling the artifact two years ago, the City has worked to determine a permanent location and create an appropriate display for the artifact, which was part of an exterior steel panel from floors 101-104 of one of the twin towers. Late last year, Suwanee's Public Arts Commission solicited proposals and ultimately contracted with Moulton to create the permanent display, which is being installed at Town Center Park in a raised area near the brick outer wall along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.
The dedication ceremony, which will include a performance by the North Gwinnett High School Advanced Chamber Orchestra, is free and open to the public. It will take place at the Remembrance display site at Town Center Park.
