Crossing guard turns his life changing injury into inspiration for others

DULUTH - Last February at Lanier High School, resource officer Rolando Jimenez was directing traffic when he was suddenly hit by a 1999 Jeep Cherokee.

"It's been a long... tough journey," Jimenez told Fox 5. His injuries included a pelvic fracture, internal bleeding, torn tendons and ligaments in his left knee, as well as two broken fingers.

For the past seven months since the accident, Jimenez has been taking physical therapy at the Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth.

"I could see the change in him every time he came in here," said physical therapy assistant Sue Alden. "You'd see the crutches come in, and then one crutch come in. He'd have the long leg brace and then that was coming off. So, you could see the progression."

Despite the difficulties, Jimenez told Fox 5 he pushes on for his wife Melissa and their four sons, as well as the community that has supported him since the beginning.

"As early as I can remember, it was amazing support that was in my room. The people coming to visit, the letters, the flowers and all the messages and everything. I honestly believe that's what kept me going."
