The team was introduced and recognized Thursday night during the White County Board of Education meeting. Assistant Superintendent Laurie Burkett said there had been a lot of interest shown by parents to begin the program.
She said they are starting with seventh- and eighth-grade students and they hope to expand the program to the high school next year.
Burkett said it expands the sports options for the girls.
"It catches some kids that you don't catch in softball and you don't catch in cross country, so it catches a niche of kids, you know it's really important to them," Burkett said.
The new team will be playing a limited schedule this year.
The WCMS 2013-14 volleyball team includes Faith Abernathy, Julia Marciano, Kassidy Hofer, Lydia Myers, Madelyn Warwick, Michayla Fischer, Olivia Simmons, Brooke Buffington, Georgia Marks, Gracie Everrett, Jasmyn Casper, LeAnn Dupree, Lexis Chacon, Rachel Gearing, Sarah Estes, Sienna Wiley, and Coach Monika Knight.
